DOUGLAS ADAMS
11 Mar 1952 - 11 May 2001

British novelist most famous for writing the irreverent Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, published in 1979.

Adams was born in Cambridge, England in 1952 to Janet Donovan and Christopher Adams; he had a sister named Susan, born 1955. Adams attended St. John's College and graduated in 1974 with a B.A. in English literature.

After graduating, Adams worked briefly with Graham Chapman on Monty Python's The Flying Circus, wrote material for radio and TV shows, and took a series of odd jobs to supplement his income.

In 1977, Adams came up with the idea for a Hitchhiker radio series, and subsequently expanded the plot into a full length book. More than 14 million copies of Hitchhiker were sold in Adams' lifetime.

Adams died of a heart attack at age 49 in Santa Barbara, California; his cremated remains were spread in Highgate Cemetery in N. London.

He is survived by his wife Jane and daughter Polly.

A very extensive biography of Adams' life is available at Wikipedia.
