MARCUS
AURELIUS
26 Apr. 121 - 17 Mar. 180

Emperor
of the Roman Empire from A.D. 161 to his death in A.D. 180.
While campaigning between 170 and 180, Aurelius wrote Meditations
as a source of guidance and self-improvement. It was
first published in 1558 in Zurich.
Aurelius is played by Richard Harris in the movie Gladiator,
though in real life his relationship with his son Commodus
was less...fatal; Commodus was actually made co-emperor by
his father in 177.
Many historians believe the decline of Rome began under Commodus,
so Aurelius' death is often considered to mark the end of
Pax Romana. |
