NAPOLEON
BONAPARTE
15 Aug. 1769 - 5 May 1821

French
general, ruler, and emperor, as well as king of Italy, conqueror
of most of Europe, and all around good guy.
Napoleon is perhaps best known for his brilliant military
leadership; his campaigns are studied to this day in military
institutions worldwide.
Napoleon is also known for developing
the Napoleonic Code, a successful attempt to create a uniform
set of laws for all of France (prior to the Code, laws varied
by area, were often determined by local custom, and were riddled
with exemptions and privileges).
Napoleon died while in exile on the island of Saint Helena;
his remains were brought back to France in 1840 and interred
at Les Invalides in Paris. |
