EURIPIDES
c. 480 B.C. - c. 406 B.C.

Greek
poet and playwright, alleged to have written some 92 plays
in his lifetime. Despite his prolific writing, he won only
five awards (one posthumous) at the Dionysia (Athenian religious
festival famed for the abundance of plays performed during
its course). Euripides was not as willing as his contemporaries
to cater to the audience; he did not approve of Athenian superstitions
nor condone their moral hypocrisy. He wrote plays with strong
female characters, and satirized many heroes of Greek mythology.
