ULYSSES S. GRANT
27 Apr 1822 - 23 Jul 1885

American general of the Civil War (Union) and 18th president of the United States (1869-1877).

Grant is well remembered for his Memoirs, which he penned in the final year of his life. The two-volume set was published by Mark Twain shortly after Grant's death and were greeted with instant acclaim. Twain likened the memoirs to Julius Caesar's Commentaries. It is still considered one of the best memoirs ever written, notable for its clarity in an age of bombastic language.
