MARIE
DE FRANCE
c. 12th century

Marie
de France was a French poet of unknown historical identity.
Scholars have narrowed her "real" identity to a
few Maries that lived at the time, including two abbesses
and a countess, but there is yet no certainty as to who Marie
really was.
What we do know about Marie is that she lived in England and
wrote poetry (mostly Breton lais, or rhymed tales
of romance and chivalry) for the Norman-ruled British court.
