MESTRIUS
PLUTARCHUS
c. 46 - 127

Greek
historian, magistrate, and priest, known today for his writings
and speeches.
Plutarch was actively involved in social affairs. Guests from
around the world convened at his country estate to discuss
various issues; these discussions were recorded and published,
and today are known as the Moralia.
Plutarch's writings had an enormous impact on English, French,
and American literature. Transcendentalists like Emerson were
greatly influenced by the Moralia; others inspired
by Plutarch's works included Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and
Sir Francis Bacon.
