FRANÇOIS
DE LA ROCHEFOUCAULD
15 Sep 1613 - 17 Mar 1680

French
nobleman and author, best known for his Mémoires
and Maximes, the latter of which expressed "the
pessimism of the disillusioned nobility" of Louis XIV's
court.
La Rochefoucauld was a textbook curmudgeon, very liberal and
democratic in his pessimism, and has given us many biting
epigrams (e.g., "The intellect is always fooled by the
heart.").
