SOCRATES
c. 469 B.C. - 399 B.C.

Greek philosopher, well known for his Socratic Method of inquiry (that is, posing a series of questions so that a person might better determine his or her underlying beliefs based on answers to these questions) and his contributions to all of the main themes in Western philosophy.

Outside of philosophy, Socrates is well known for his decision to drink hemlock after essentially being convicted for thinking outside of the box. To simplify greatly the views of the time, Socrates was not of the popular opinion that all men were entitled to self-government. These views, and a touch of impiety, cost Socrates his life.
