OSCAR WILDE
16 Oct 1854 - 30 Nov 1900

Irish playwright, novelist, and poet, best remembered for his sarcastic wit and numerous plays.

Wilde is also known (quite unfortunately) for being tried and convicted of gross indecency related to alleged homosexual acts. Wilde was sentenced to two years of hard labor. While in prison, he composed a 50,000 word letter to his lover; it was never delivered, and was only fully published in 1962. Prison was not kind to Wilde's health, and he died penniless three years later.
